Ann Elizabeth Osterhout was born on April 20, 1828, in Indian Castle, Herkimer, New York. She is the daughter of Jacob Osterhout and Maria "Polly" Devoe. Ann Elizabeth and Henry were married in 1848. They had at least seven children: Olive, Alvina, Henry Damon, George W., Rosaltha, Horatio Seymour, and William Palmer. A. Ross Eckler reported that another son, Henry M., was born in 1851 and probably died before Henry Damon was born. In 1850 Henry, 23, and Ann, 19, were living with her brother, Cornelius Osterhout, and his family in Springfield, Otsego, New York. Daughters Olive, 1, and Alvina, 6 months, were with them. Henry was working as a laborer. By 1860 Henry, 34, and Ann, 32, had moved to the Township of Stark, settling in Brown's Hollow below Van Hornesville. Henry was working as a day laborer with an estate valued at $300. Children Olive, 12, Henry Damon, 4, George, 3, and Rosaltha, 1, were in residence. Daughter Alvina had died sometime before the 1860 Census. In 1869 the family resided on two acres in Van Hornesville. A. Henry is working as a farm laborer with an estate valued at $400. Children, George, 12, Rosaltha, 11, Horatio, 7, and William, 5, are at home. Olive, 22, has her own home, is married to John H. Maxfield, and has two children. At 14, Henry Damon is probably working elsewhere. In the 1880 Census, Henry, 54, is working on a farm and Ann, 52, is still keeping house. They live in Stark. Willie, 14, is the only child at home; he works on a farm. Sons George and Horatio are living and working on other farms. Daughter Rosaltha had wed Michael Mickel/Mickle recently. Married in 1876, son Henry Damon, 23, is a farmer. Henry Damon died in 1886, at the age of 29, leaving his wife Georgiana and two young children.
